When I was a little girl, about nine years old, my favourite
activity to do at home was to play school. I had a mini-chalkboard in my
basement and I used to line-up all of my stuffed animals as if they were my
little students. I assigned them homework, rang a bell for recess, and even gave
them math and vocabulary tests. I knew from then that I wanted to be a
teacher.
I never actually liked school. From kindergarten to grade four, I dreaded
going to school every single day. I used to call my mom all the time to come
pick me up. I did not have many friends because I was shy and my older sister
would always torment me in the schoolyard. In grade four, I began to have more
friends and I began to realize that I was recognized by the other kids because
of my high academic achievement.
When I finally graduated from elementary and went on to high school,
everything was great. I was so happy to leave elementary school because I wanted
to get away and start a fresh, new beginning, which is what exactly I did.
I love little kids. Besides the fact that they are cute, I find them very
care-free, imaginative and curious. They are eager to learn and listen to their
elders because they want to know about everything! I would really like to teach
kindergarten but I am also opened to teach grades one to three. I would like to
teach these grade levels because these were the grade levels that were the
toughest for me and the worst years for me, and as a teacher, I want to make
them to most special years for my students. I want to be the teacher that my
students will look back to one day and say to themselves, “Miss Elaine was so
inspiring. She made my years at elementary school so much fun! What a great
teacher!” I want to make a difference in kids’lives and prove to them that they
can do anything if they put their minds to it and always believe in themselves.
Each student is different, and I want to be able to accommodate myself to
each student’s needs. Teaching is a tough job, but I am ready for the challenge
because when you are passionate about something, it makes you a stronger person.
I am passionate about children and about teaching children, and I cannot imagine
my future career not having me to deal with children on a day to day basis.
