Education is an important aspect in a child’s development because education provides so many choices and opportunities. To be educated is not only about passing exams, doing homework, and going to school. An educated person is a person who is well-rounded; is knowledgeable about current events, reads books, and knows how to carry-on a conversation. As a teacher, I would want to provide my students with as much knowledge and variety as I possibly can.
My ideal school would be a semi-private elementary school. Both genders would attend this school and they would be required to wear a school uniform. By requiring all students to wear a school uniform, it would give structure to the school. By having uniforms, it gives a sense of discipline and discipline provides structure in a school. Also, by all the children wearing uniforms, it would allow the school to look as one big family. Family is the most important value to me because a family will always be there for you. A family’s love is unconditional and ever-lasting and thus by creating a family environment in the school, it will bring the students and teachers together and make the students feel more comfortable in the classroom setting.
This semi-private elementary school will consist of the grades from kindergarten to grade six. Personally, I would love to teach grade one because they already have a basis of education from kindergarten so now that they are in grade one, they can begin with hands-on activities and begin to explore and expand their prior knowledge. I want to be known and remembered as the teacher who allowed her students to be themselves, this is my ultimate goal. In order to achieve this goal, I would provide the students with freedom. Freedom would require an open-classroom environment that allows the students not to be judged and be who they want to be .Each student’s opinion is invited to be voiced and listened to. There is no right or wrong answer concerning your own opinions, beliefs and views about a topic and I would want to promote this in my day to day teachings. Another daily objective would be sharing. I would want the students to share their personal stories, experiences, dreams, and wishes. By doing so, it will provide group experience. The more and more sharing there is in the classroom, the more and more knowledge would be distributed and thus more and more growth would occur.
The students’ desks in my classroom would be placed in a horseshoe shape for two reasons. One reason for setting up the desks in the shape of a horseshoe is that it does not follow the traditional structure of the classroom and by not following the traditional structure of the classroom, it does not constrain me to teach in the traditional way. The second reason for the horseshoe desk setup is that it presents a sense of comfort in the classroom setting; the children would feel more at ease and will be able to have eye-contact with every single student in the room. My desk would be setup in the back corner of the classroom. By placing myself there, it allows me to have a clear view of all my students. Secondly, I would place myself in the back of the classroom and not in the front because if I were to put my desk in the front, then I would set-off the tone of the classroom as “I am your boss and you will do as I say because I have control of you”. At the front of the classroom would be a black board and on top of the black would be the alphabet because I have always envisioned in my head that I would have the alphabet on top of the black board. All around the classroom would be decorated with the students’ work, and would overall be a bright and colourful setting.
If I were to describe my ideal student, I would want them to be engaged, organized, honest, respectful, obedient, curious, motivated, involved, caring, and funny. These are great qualities to have and if all my students could have these qualities, I would be a very happy teacher!
Ultimately, no matter what happens in the classroom, the main aim for education as a teacher, to provide and apply in her classroom, is happiness. If the children are not happy, then all the other goals and daily objectives stated above cannot be attained. The environment of the classroom plays an important role on the students. If the environment of the classroom is not positive, then the children are not positive about their education and thus are not motivated to be educated. With this, my aim of education is happiness and by being positive, staying positive and promoting positivity, I hope to have an optimistic affect on the children I plan to teach in the near future.
